Let's Talk: Domestic Violence in the NFL

In recent months, several high-profile NFL players have been under the microscope for incidents of domestic abuse.

Among the many names, the incidents that have received the most attention are Greg Hardy of the Dallas Cowboys and Ray Rice formerly with the Baltimore Ravens.

The noticeable difference between these two names is one is still playing the game, and the other was kicked off the field.

Sports Analyst Terry Bradshaw, as reported by Huffpost Sports, on the NFL Sunday pregame show was quoted as saying, “Anybody, in my opinion, who lays a hand on a woman, I don’t care who you are, my friend: You never come back in this league.”

As for Ray Rice, this was the case. As reported, Rice punched his then girlfriend Janay Palmer in the face. Rice was suspended, initially, for two games. Once the video emerged, the suspension was made indefinite.

Today, Ray Rice is working towards raising support within the NFL for domestic violence. Rice says that this is a life-long commitment to raise awareness.

For Greg Hardy, he still is playing. Graphic photos, as reported, were released of Hardy’s ex-girlfriend. Deadspin was the first to release the photos. The Cowboys have received a significant amount of criticism for not releasing Hardy and allowing him to continue to play football for their team.

In the midst of domestic violence issues in the NFL, the league has aired an anti-domestic violence PSA and updated their domestic violence policy.

The NFL faces criticism after criticism in the face of this issue. This issue not only affects the player, but it continues up the food chain to the team and to the entire league.

The NFL holds spots on Monday night, Thursday night and Sunday. Thus, it has a lot of exposure, with lots of fans.
